How Altitude Affects Your Travels in Ecuador

Blog Article:

Ecuador is one of the most geographically diverse countries in the world. In a single day, you can go from the Amazon jungle to the Andes and down to the Pacific coast. But traveling at different elevations means your body must adapt quickly — especially when visiting high-altitude cities.

What does “high altitude” mean in Ecuador?

In Ecuador, any place over 2,400 meters (about 7,800 feet) above sea level is considered high altitude. Cities like Quito (2,850 m), Cuenca (2,560 m), Riobamba (2,754 m), and Baños (1,820 m) are popular destinations located in the Andes region.

The air is thinner at these elevations, meaning it contains less oxygen. This can affect how you feel — especially if you're coming from sea level or a lower-altitude area.

Common symptoms of altitude sickness:

  • Headache

  • Nausea

  • Fatigue or weakness

  • Dizziness

  • Shortness of breath

  • Difficulty sleeping

These symptoms are usually mild and temporary, but in some cases, they can be more severe.

How to adapt better to high altitude:

  1. Ascend gradually if possible.

  2. Stay hydrated — drink plenty of water.

  3. Avoid alcohol and heavy meals during your first days.

  4. Rest and don’t overexert yourself in the first 24–48 hours.

  5. Drink coca tea (a traditional Andean remedy) or try ginger tea for nausea.

  6. If needed, take altitude sickness medication (consult your doctor before your trip).

Tips for travelers:

  • If you’re flying directly into Quito, plan to spend your first day relaxing.

  • Consider visiting Baños or Mindo first, as both are at lower altitudes and can help you adapt before heading higher.

  • Always listen to your body — rest when needed.
