DETAILED ITINERARY

Hotel Pickup and Departure from Baños de Agua Santa

Our adventure begins with pickup from the Turismo Ecuador 24 office or your hotel in Baños de Agua Santa at 9:00 a.m.

After participant registration and a brief tour orientation, we will begin our journey by private transportation to Chimborazo Province.

Along the way, we will travel through the spectacular Avenue of the Volcanoes, enjoying breathtaking Andean landscapes, traditional indigenous communities, vast highland páramos, and panoramic views of some of Ecuador's most impressive volcanoes.

 

Arrival at Chimborazo Wildlife Production Reserve

Upon arrival, we will complete the park registration process, and our guide will provide an introduction to the ecological importance of this protected area.

During the visit, you will learn about:

  • The history of Chimborazo Volcano.
  • The geography of the Ecuadorian Andes.
  • The Andean páramo ecosystem.
  • Native flora and wildlife.
  • The significance of Chimborazo as the mountain whose summit is the closest point to the Sun from the center of the Earth due to the planet's equatorial bulge.

Throughout the reserve, it is common to observe wildlife such as:

  • Vicuñas.
  • Alpacas.
  • Llamas.
  • Andean foxes (occasionally).
  • Páramo rabbits.
  • High-altitude bird species.

Several stops will be made for photographs of the spectacular Andean scenery.

 

Ascent to Carrel Refuge

We will continue by vehicle to the parking area at Carrel Refuge, located at 4,850 meters (15,912 ft) above sea level.

From here, we begin our hike to Edward Whymper Refuge, following a scenic high-altitude trail surrounded by volcanic landscapes.

 

Hike to Edward Whymper Refuge

The hike takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on the group's pace and altitude acclimatization.

The trail consists of volcanic terrain with moderate inclines, so we will walk at a comfortable pace while making occasional stops to admire the scenery.

During the ascent, you will enjoy:

  • Spectacular volcanic landscapes.
  • Unique rock formations.
  • Vast Andean páramos.
  • Views of Chimborazo Glacier.
  • Panoramic views of the Ecuadorian Andes.

 

Arrival at Edward Whymper Refuge

Upon reaching 5,000 meters (16,404 ft) above sea level, we arrive at the historic Edward Whymper Refuge, used by climbers from around the world as a resting point before attempting the summit of Chimborazo.

Here you will have time to:

  • Rest.
  • Enjoy a hot drink or light snack (subject to availability).
  • Take photographs.
  • Admire Chimborazo Glacier.
  • Enjoy one of the finest panoramic views in the Ecuadorian Andes.

Your guide will explain the story of Edward Whymper, the first mountaineer to successfully reach the summit of Chimborazo, as well as the geographical importance of this iconic volcano.

 

Optional Hike to the Glacier Viewpoint

For travelers who are well acclimatized and looking for an even greater adventure, there is the option to continue hiking for approximately 20 additional minutes to the Glacier Viewpoint, located at around 5,100 meters (16,732 ft) above sea level.

From this viewpoint, you will enjoy an incredible close-up view of Chimborazo's permanent glacier and breathtaking mountain scenery.

This activity depends on:

  • Weather conditions.
  • Trail conditions.
  • The physical condition of the group.

 

Descent to Carrel Refuge

After enjoying the high-altitude experience, we will begin our descent back to Carrel Refuge and the parking area.

Along the way, we may stop again to observe wildlife and capture more photographs of the spectacular landscapes.

 

Traditional Andean Lunch

After the hike, we will enjoy a delicious lunch at a local restaurant, where you can taste traditional Andean cuisine.

 

Return to Baños de Agua Santa

Following a day filled with nature, adventure, and breathtaking scenery, we will begin our return journey to Baños de Agua Santa.

Relax during the drive while enjoying the beautiful landscapes of the Ecuadorian Highlands one last time.
