The Antisana Volcano Climb (5,758 m / 18,891 ft) is one of Ecuador's most demanding and rewarding mountaineering expeditions. Located within the spectacular Antisana Ecological Reserve, this technical glacier climb is designed for experienced climbers seeking an authentic high-altitude adventure.

During this 2-day, 1-night expedition, you'll trek through pristine Andean landscapes, establish a base camp near the glacier, and summit one of Ecuador's highest volcanoes under the guidance of certified mountain professionals. From the summit, enjoy extraordinary views of Cotopaxi, Cayambe, Chimborazo, the Eastern Andes, and the Ecuadorian Amazon.

Location: Antisana Ecological Reserve, Pichincha & Napo Provinces, Ecuador.

Difficulty: High – Technical.

Requirements

  • Excellent physical condition.
  • Previous mountaineering experience.
  • Prior acclimatization above 4,500 m.
  • Basic knowledge of crampons and ice axe techniques.


DETAILED ITINERARY

DAY 1 – APPROACH & BASE CAMP

Meeting at Turismo Ecuador 24

Your expedition begins at the Turismo Ecuador 24 office, where you will meet your certified high-altitude mountain guide.

Participants will complete the registration process, sign the liability waiver, and receive their technical mountaineering equipment (all equipment must be collected one day before the expedition).

You will then attend a comprehensive safety and technical briefing covering:

  • Proper use of technical climbing equipment.
  • Basic glacier travel techniques.
  • High-altitude mountain safety.
  • Weather conditions and forecasts.
  • Expedition itinerary and ascent plan.

Departure from Baños de Agua Santa

Depart by private tourist transportation toward the Antisana Ecological Reserve, traveling through breathtaking Andean landscapes, high-altitude páramo ecosystems, scenic lagoons, and vast plains where it is possible to spot Andean condors, white-tailed deer, and other native wildlife.

Arrival at the Starting Point

Upon arrival at the authorized mountaineering access point, your guide will conduct a complete inspection of all technical equipment before beginning the hike.

Hike to Base Camp (4,600 m / 15,092 ft)

Begin a 2 to 3-hour trek to establish Base Camp near the glacier.

Depending on the expedition logistics, part of the equipment may be transported by porters or pack mules.

Base Camp Setup

After setting up camp, you will have time to rest, hydrate, take photographs, and continue the acclimatization process before the summit attempt.

Dinner and Technical Briefing

Following dinner, your guide will provide a detailed explanation of:

  • The summit route.
  • Glacier conditions.
  • Rope techniques and glacier travel.
  • Rescue procedures.
  • Essential safety protocols.

After the briefing, participants will rest early in preparation for the summit ascent, which begins during the early hours of the morning.


DAY 2 – ANTISANA SUMMIT DAY

Before dawn, begin the technical ascent to the summit of Antisana Volcano (5,758 m).

The climb follows glaciers, snowfields, and ice slopes requiring the use of:

  • Crampons
  • Ice axe
  • Harness
  • Helmet
  • Climbing rope

The ascent typically takes 6 to 8 hours, depending on glacier conditions and group pace.

Upon reaching the summit, enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of:

  • Cotopaxi Volcano
  • Cayambe Volcano
  • Chimborazo Volcano
  • Antisana Ecological Reserve
  • Eastern Andes
  • Ecuadorian Amazon

After celebrating at the summit, descend safely to Base Camp, enjoy a light breakfast, pack your equipment, and hike back to the transportation point.

Return to Baños de Agua Santa.
