Trek across remote Andean landscapes to Laguna Amarilla, establish base camp beneath towering volcanic cliffs, and prepare for an unforgettable glacier ascent.

On summit day, climb snow, ice, and volcanic rock using professional mountaineering equipment while accompanied by experienced certified mountain guides. From the 5,319-meter Obispo Summit, enjoy incredible panoramic views of Sangay, Chimborazo, Tungurahua, Carihuairazo, and the Ecuadorian Andes.

DAY 1 | Baños or Riobamba – Laguna Amarilla – Base Camp

Meet Your Mountain Guide

Your expedition begins at the Turismo Ecuador 24 office, where you will meet your certified high-mountain guide.

The following activities will take place:

  • Participant registration.
  • Personal equipment inspection.
  • Document signing.
  • General expedition briefing.

The tour can start from Baños de Agua Santa or Riobamba, depending on the agreed itinerary.


Transfer to Sangay National Park

Travel by private vehicle to the community of Releche, the main gateway to the spectacular Sangay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

During the journey, you'll enjoy breathtaking Andean landscapes, traditional indigenous communities, and vast high-altitude páramo ecosystems.


Trek to Laguna Amarilla

Altitude: 4,200 m (13,780 ft)

Approximate Hiking Time: 5 to 6 hours

Begin one of Ecuador's most spectacular trekking routes through high-altitude grasslands, wetlands, and mountain trails while enjoying incredible views of the impressive El Altar Massif.

Along the hike, you'll discover glacial lakes, unique Andean flora, and pristine natural landscapes.


Arrival at Laguna Amarilla

Set up base camp beside the breathtaking Laguna Amarilla, surrounded by the towering volcanic walls of El Altar.

Time to:

  • Rest.
  • Rehydrate.
  • Enjoy the scenery.
  • Take photographs.
  • Acclimatize to the altitude.

Dinner and Technical Briefing

After a hot dinner, your mountain guide will conduct a technical briefing covering:

  • Summit route.
  • Weather conditions.
  • Proper use of technical equipment.
  • Glacier travel techniques.
  • Safety procedures.

Early rest to prepare for the summit ascent before dawn.


DAY 2 | Obispo Summit (5,319 m) – Return

Early Wake-Up

Activities begin before sunrise.

Enjoy a light breakfast while your guide performs a final inspection of all technical equipment.


Ascent to Obispo Summit

Today begins the most challenging part of the expedition.

The climb crosses:

  • Glaciers.
  • Snow slopes.
  • Ice sections.
  • Volcanic rock terrain.

The following technical equipment is mandatory:

  • Crampons.
  • Harness.
  • Helmet.
  • Ice axe.
  • Rope.
  • Mountaineering equipment.

The ascent takes approximately 6 to 8 hours, depending on weather conditions and the pace of the group.


Obispo Summit

Altitude: 5,319 m (17,451 ft)

Upon reaching the summit, you'll enjoy one of the most spectacular panoramic views in the Ecuadorian Andes.

On clear days, you can admire:

  • Sangay Volcano.
  • Chimborazo Volcano.
  • Tungurahua Volcano.
  • Carihuairazo Volcano.
  • Los Ilinizas.

Enjoy time for photographs, a short rest, and celebrating your achievement before beginning the descent.


Descent to Base Camp

Return to base camp following the same route.

Upon arrival, enjoy a hot breakfast before dismantling the campsite and preparing for the return journey.


Trek Back to Releche

Hike approximately 5 hours back to the community of Releche.


Return to Riobamba or Baños de Agua Santa

Private transportation back to Riobamba or Baños de Agua Santa.

End of the expedition.
