Whale Route in Manabí: Ocean Wonders, Coastal Culture, and Biodiversity in Ecuador

From July to October, Ecuador’s Pacific coastline becomes a stage for one of the ocean’s most majestic spectacles: the migration of humpback whales. The Whale Route in Manabí offers an unforgettable journey that blends marine ecotourism, community culture, and natural beauty.

The Journey of the Ocean Giants

Thousands of humpback whales travel from the Antarctic to the warm Ecuadorian waters to mate and give birth. Key observation points include Puerto López, Ayampe, Salango, and Machalilla, where boat tours offer the chance to witness their powerful breaches, tail slaps, and songs.

Machalilla National Park: Marine and Cultural Sanctuary

The route includes the Machalilla National Park, home to rich ecosystems of dolphins, sea turtles, blue-footed boobies, mangroves, and coral reefs. Visitors can also explore the Agua Blanca community, known for its thermal waters and archaeological remains of the ancient Manteño culture.

Responsible and Community-Based Tourism

Tours are operated by certified local guides who promote marine conservation and ethical wildlife observation. Eco-lodges, traditional seafood cuisine, and workshops on sustainability are offered by the coastal communities along the route.

Coastal Traditions and Flavors

Beyond the sea, the Whale Route introduces travelers to vibrant coastal heritage: straw hat weaving, traditional music, artisanal fishing, and iconic dishes like ceviche, viche, and wood-fired fish dishes.

A Transformative Marine Adventure

The Whale Route is not just a tour—it’s a journey of connection with nature, culture, and conservation. Visitors leave with unforgettable memories and a new appreciation for the wonders of Ecuador’s Pacific coast.

Experience the Whale Route in Manabí, Ecuador: witness humpback whales between July and October, explore marine biodiversity, and connect with coastal communities and traditions.
