Cotopaxi National Park, one of Ecuador’s most iconic destinations, offers various hiking trails, and one of the most breathtaking is the Viewpoints Trail. This route takes visitors through high-altitude Andean landscapes, lakes, and panoramic viewpoints of the Cotopaxi Volcano (5,897 m), one of the highest active volcanoes in the world.
How to Get There
Cotopaxi National Park is located 90 minutes from Quito and can be reached by private vehicle or organized tours. The trail begins at the North Entrance checkpoint, where visitors must register before entering the park.
Landscapes and Biodiversity
The Viewpoints Trail is approximately 6 km (round trip) and features:
- Natural viewpoints with spectacular views of Cotopaxi and the Ecuadorian Andes.
- Limpiopungo Lagoon, a high-altitude wetland home to migratory birds like the Andean condor and Andean ducks.
- Páramo vegetation, including ichu grass and chuquiragua, a flower known as the “mountaineers’ flower.”
- Wildlife sightings, including wild horses, deer, and Andean foxes.
