The Petrified Forest of Puyango: A Journey into Ecuador’s Prehistoric Past

Located on the border between the El Oro and Loja provinces, the Puyango Petrified Forest is one of the world's most important fossil sites. Featuring fossilized trees dating back to the Cretaceous era, over 100 million years ago, this forest is a unique destination where visitors can walk among the remains of an ecosystem that existed when dinosaurs still roamed the Earth.

A Natural and Scientific Treasure

The Puyango Petrified Forest covers approximately 2,658 hectares and is home to fossilized conifers that can reach up to 15 meters in length and 2 meters in diameter. Additionally, the area has yielded fossils of mollusks and ammonites, indicating that this region was once submerged under the sea millions of years ago.

Scientific studies have shown that Puyango is one of the largest petrified forests in the world and one of the few located in Latin America. Its significance lies in the exceptional preservation of its fossils, providing valuable insights into the planet’s evolution.
