Pacoche Coastal Marine Wildlife Refuge: forest, wildlife and marine ecosystems on Ecuador’s central coast
Located just a few kilometers from Manta, in the province of Manabí, the Pacoche Coastal Marine Wildlife Refuge is one of the most biodiverse protected areas of Ecuador’s coast. This refuge covers both humid tropical forest and coastal–marine ecosystems, offering an exceptional combination of landscapes, species and ecological experiences in a single destination.
One of its most famous inhabitants is the howler monkey, whose powerful calls echo through the dense vegetation of the forest during the early hours of the morning. The marine area of Pacoche is equally impressive. Its beaches serve as nesting sites for sea turtles, especially the olive ridley, which arrive each year to lay their eggs on the sand. The waters near the refuge are also home to rich marine life, and between June and October it is possible to observe humpback whales along the coast as they migrate and perform their famous acrobatic jumps.
