Jora Festival in Cotacachi: Culture, Tradition, and Ancestral Flavors

A Tribute to Chicha de Jora

Every year in September, the town of Cotacachi comes alive with the Jora Festival, an event that pays tribute to the traditional chicha de jora, a fermented drink made from corn. This festival is one of the most representative celebrations of Andean culture, highlighting the importance of agriculture, indigenous identity, and community unity.

Origin and History

Chicha de jora has been consumed since pre-Hispanic times by the indigenous peoples of the Andes. Its fermentation process makes it a special beverage used in sacred ceremonies, rituals of gratitude to Pachamama (Mother Earth), and community festivities. With colonization, chicha remained culturally significant and is still a symbol of tradition in Ecuador today.
