In the heart of Quito, the capital of Ecuador, one of the most famous and mysterious legends is told: the Legend of Cantuña. The Historical Context

However, Cantuña began to regret making a pact with the devil. He knew he had sold his soul and feared the day would come when he would have to fulfill the agreement. But when the devil came to claim his soul, Cantuña had devised a plan.
Cantuña's Trick
Before the devil could come to claim his soul, Cantuña rushed to the church and began digging holes in the ground, hiding coins and valuable items in them. At that moment, Cantuña began praying, invoking the saints and asking for help. When the devil arrived to claim his soul, Cantuña begged for more time to finish the details of the church.
The devil, impatient and eager to fulfill the deal, agreed to give Cantuña an additional day. However, when the devil went to inspect the church, he realized that the holes where Cantuña had hidden the coins prevented the demons from completing their work. In the end, the devil could not seal his part of the bargain, and Cantuña escaped his fate.
