Arenillas Ecological Reserve: biodiversity and conservation in Ecuador’s dry forest
Located in the province of El Oro, the Arenillas Ecological Reserve is one of the most important protected areas of Ecuador’s coastal region. It conserves one of the last and most threatened ecosystems in the country: the tropical dry forest, a habitat that shelters rare species adapted to long drought seasons and warm temperatures.
The reserve is home to more than 150 bird species, including the Pacific royal flycatcher, the grey-cheeked parakeet, and the slaty becard. Mammals such as deer, ocelots, armadillos, and howler monkeys also inhabit the area.
