Explore the Three Volcanoes Route, a fascinating Ecuadorian route connecting three majestic volcanoes: Cotopaxi, Chimborazo, and Tungurahua. A journey full of breathtaking landscapes and volcanic activity.
The Three Volcanoes Route is one of the most exciting journeys for nature and adventure lovers. Located in the Central Highlands of Ecuador, this route connects three of the country's most impressive volcanoes: Cotopaxi, Chimborazo, and Tungurahua, offering spectacular views and a unique experience amidst the grandeur of the Ecuadorian Andes.
Cotopaxi: The Giant of Ice
Cotopaxi, one of the highest and most active volcanoes in the world, is the first destination of the route. With its imposing conical shape and snow-capped peak, Cotopaxi is perfect for trekking and mountaineering enthusiasts. The Cotopaxi National Park offers hiking routes to enjoy the local flora and fauna, ideal for those wanting to explore high-altitude volcanic landscapes and mountain lakes.
Chimborazo: The Closest Point to the Sun
Chimborazo is known as the closest point to the sun from the Earth's center due to its geographical location. With its 6,263 meters above sea level, it is the highest volcano in Ecuador and offers a unique experience for adventurers. The Chimborazo National Park provides several hiking trails to explore its desert-like landscapes and high peaks. Additionally, hikers can spot Andean wildlife such as llamas and white-tailed deer.
Tungurahua: The Active Mountain
Tungurahua, known as “La Colosa,” is an active volcano located near the town of Baños. This volcano has been the subject of numerous monitoring efforts due to its constant activity. Travelers who embark on the Three Volcanoes Route also have the opportunity to enjoy Baños' hot springs and partake in activities like rafting, canopy tours, or hiking through the region’s beautiful canyons.
The route can be traveled by car, and it's well-connected by the Pan-American highway. To start the journey, you can take a bus from Quito to Latacunga (for Cotopaxi), or head towards Ambato (for Chimborazo and Tungurahua). Along the way, you'll encounter several points of interest such as Baños or the Limpiopungo Refuge in Cotopaxi.
If you plan on hiking or ascending, be prepared for the cold temperatures and high altitude. Bring suitable clothing, water, and sunscreen.
Some of the volcanoes require permits to access, so it’s advisable to check ahead and hire a guide if you plan to climb Cotopaxi.
Baños is a perfect place to relax after your adventure. Enjoy its natural hot springs and stunning waterfalls.
