In the central Andes of Ecuador, between the provinces of Cotopaxi and Bolívar, lies one of the country’s most enigmatic and least-explored archaeological sites: Malqui-Machay. According to oral tradition and some historical research, this sacred place may be the final resting site of the Inca emperor Huayna Cápac, father of Atahualpa.
Malqui: The Sacred Ancestor’s Body
"Malqui" in Quechua refers to a mummy or the sacred remains of an ancestor. The area features stone structures, ancient pathways, and a ceremonial platform believed to have been a major spiritual center, possibly linked to Inca ancestor worship and dynastic continuity.
